Mmm, the error message from plug in is not output by log.
There may be a cause else.

Please send phpinfo in email.

hi, following on from emailing you the php data requested, i erased another hosting account on the non MT working host company and did a clean full install of latest joomla. Again MT had exactly the same error message as before so it looks like its something to do with the hosting environment. When installing joomla I did notice that the joomla install inidcated in its check that error messages were turned ON which was not the case on the working hosting company. The working hosting company also had its hosting software far more upto date (it subsequently updated php to the latest but this still didnt allow MT to work) ... any ideas on getting MT working on my host
